Artist's Statement for Wet Works
My current body of work (Wet Works) is a continuing series of visual explorations in the theme of water and it's rhythmic connections between objects; Yin and the Yang; the interaction between water, light, atmosphere and earth in a sort of push-pull dance; incoming tide running against dry shoreline; warmth of the suns rays melting away at ice and waves crashing against rocks. My challenge has been to understand the movement of light on water and express this experience through painting. I trap the evanescent light of nature through unconventional layerings and mixings of pigments. The paintings provide the mind with an active visual space to inhabit an active, alive space that is simultaneously a place of rest. When following moving water, the mind can become fully absorbed in it, and one moves out of conventional time into the spontaneous present. The human experience is one of emotion and meditation. I am attracted to scenes involving strong clear light, that will cast strong shadows for subject matter. I look for a composition of strong dark and light patterns to create a dynamic tension and energy in a piece. My work is drawn from the realism of nature, but the overall pattern sometimes creates a sort of abstraction. Color is planned to enhance the tensions and drama in my overall compositions.
